Shalach manot, (pronounced by some as shalach manos), also known as Purim baskets, are gifts of food or drink that are sent to friends, relatives, neighbors, teachers, business associates, and other acquaintances on Purim day. It is a mitzvah to send Shalachmanos, a Purim gift of food to two people on Purim day. Of course one can send Shalachmanot to close friends and relatives. It is even more meaningful to send Shalach manos to someone in order to repair an estranged friendship. The effect of one Shalach manot purim basket can last a lifetime.
